On May 9th 2001, the Internet Education Foundation (IEF) and the Committee on Economic Development (CED) hosted the first event of its “State of The Net” series. This policy-oriented series was designed to examine the framework for Internet governance. The premiere event, “A Dialogue on the Digital Divide,” explored the intricacies of the digital opportunity discussion. IEF and CED assembled a diverse group of experienced professionals from both the information technology and policy arenas in order to facilitate an environment for effective and comprehensive discussion. The event was a tremendous success and the dialogue that took place can now serve as a constructive foundation for further analysis of this issue.

Topics:

  • Seamless integration of computer and internet goals into programs that concentrate on development of basic skills, education, and social and physical infrastructure
  • Public and private programs in the U.S. to promote widespread access to the Internet
  • Initiatives to expand web content to address the interests of the low-income populations
  • Efforts by federal, state, and local governments to provide their services electronically
