State of the Net Series: Presented by the Internet Education Foundation

Introduction to the State of The Net Series
The Internet Education Foundation (IEF) has begun to host a series of events designed to explore the "State of the Net." Specifically, this policy-oriented series will serve as fora to examine the framework for Internet governance. The conference will establish benchmarks for this examination and will set goals for future progress. The conference will also serve as an opportunity to find measurable ways to evaluate progress in a credible manner. The community will then convene regularly to monitor its success in achieving the objectives and suggest new methods of reaching our goals.

4th Annual State of the Net Conference
On January 30, 2008, the Internet Caucus Advsiory Committee will host the 4th annual Internet Caucus State of the Net Conference series at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. Like the previous two conferences, the event will bring together industry leaders and policymakers. Since the majority of attendees are government and congressional staff, this event is not to be missed. [more]

1st Annual Global State of the Net Conference
On November 30, 2007, the Internet Caucus Advsiory Committee hosted the 1st annual Global State of the Net Conference series in London, U.K. The Global State of the Net Conference featured parliamentary leaders from Europe, Members of the U.S. Congressional Internet Caucus including Congressmen Rick Boucher and Bob Goodlatte, government officials, leading tech policy academics, industry executives and representatives from NGOs. The format for the conference was informal and encouraged discussion and debate. The Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford together with the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee (ICAC), part of a 501c3 charitable organization, provided a neutral platform for an informative policy dialogue. 1st Annual State of the Net West Conference
On August 10, 2007, the Internet Caucus Advsiory Committee hosted the 1st annual State of the Net West Conference series in Silicon Valley. In collaboration with Santa Clara University, the ICAC hosted the first-ever ICAC State of the Net West Conference to dialogue on top technology policy issues impacting the Silicon Valley. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren led the roundtable discussion with participants from academia, the public interest community, and technology companies. The discussion was designed as a channel for West Coast thought leaders from the academic community and private sector to help inform the technology policy issues debated in Washington and better reflect the fast-paced evolution of the marketplace. 2nd Annual Internet Caucus State of the Net Conference
On February 8, 2006, the Internet Caucus Advsiory Committee hosted the 2nd annual Internet Caucus State of the Net Conference series at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. The conference allows attendees to hear where federal decision-making will lead and also provides opportunities to network and forge relationships with other influencers. [more]

On February 9, 2005, the Internet Caucus Advsiory Committee launched the Internet Caucus State of the Net Conference series at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. The Conference is designed to give those who follow policy developments a first look at the policy direction of the 109th Congress. At a time when all commerce and communications are migrating to the Internet as a root platform, the importance of government policymaking cannot be understated. Creating a Trusted Information Network for Homeland Security
On December 2, 2003 the Markle Task Force released its second report on National Security in the Information Age. This report addressed the key actions needed to create an information network that would increase our nation's security while preserving our fundamental rights and civil liberties. A Dialogue on the Digital Divide
On May 9th 2001, the Internet Education Foundation (IEF) and the Committee on Economic Development (CED) hosted the first event of its “State of The Net” series. This policy-oriented series was designed to examine the framework for Internet governance. The premiere event, “A Dialogue on the Digital Divide,” explored the intricacies of the digital opportunity discussion. IEF and CED assembled a diverse group of experienced professionals from both the information technology and policy arenas in order to facilitate an environment for effective and comprehensive discussion. The event was a tremendous success and the dialogue that took place can now serve as a constructive foundation for further analysis of this issue.

Toward a Framework for Internet Accountability
On July 10, 2001 the Internet Education Foundation (IEF) hosted a panel discussion on the Markle Foundation's study, "Toward a Framework for Internet Accountability." The study finds that at a time of intense debate over key Internet policy Americans are enthusiastic about the Internet, but that they are eager to have new forms of public, private, and non-profit governance of the Internet in order to give them more protection and control when they go online.
